The UN Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) emphasizes that the energy transition process must uphold values of equality and justice through the implementation of Human Rights (HR) standards, indigenous and local community rights, and environmental protection.
Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CRMs) refer to metals, non-metals (minerals), and other substances (e.g., helium) considered essential for the renewable energy transition, digital economy, and national security. Their supply may be at risk due to geological scarcity, geopolitical issues, trade policies, or other factors. These materials serve as key components in various green and renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, batteries, and wind turbines. Market demand for these minerals has doubled in the past five years and is projected to increase between two to four times by 2040.
