This year’s International Day of Democracy 2023, with the theme “Empowering the Next Generation,” focuses on the critical role of young people in advancing democracy and ensuring their voices are included in decisions that significantly impact their world.
However, today’s youth are faced with a shrinking civic space. Young people find it challenging to participate freely in the political process and need adequate access to information; government policies and actions tend to be authoritarian, unaccountable, and less representative of the interests of society as a whole.
The decline of Civic Space can threaten a healthy democracy and lead to human rights and sustainable development.
