PWYP calls for precautionary pause ahead of 2026 ISA meeting
Indonesia is being urged to support a moratorium or precautionary pause on deep-sea mining at the upcoming International Seabed Authority (ISA) meeting in July 2026.
The Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Indonesia Coalition warned that commercial seabed mining could trigger irreversible environmental damage, including biodiversity loss and disruption of marine ecosystems.
“We are conveying our demands and proposed stance as part of a community that foresees the potential threats of massive ecological damage if deep-sea mining is commercially approved during the UN meeting,” National Coordinator Aryanto Nugroho said on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
PWYP said Indonesia’s role on the ISA Council for 2023–2026 gives it influence in shaping the Mining Code, which could regulate future commercial seabed mining.
The coalition called for a global moratorium and stronger representation at the 2026 ISA talks to prevent premature approval of seabed mining rules.
