The EU New Battery Regulations were introduced in 2023, focusing on standardizing battery life cycles and recycling processes. These regulations can be understood as the European Union’s response to the projected global demand for batteries, which is expected to increase 14-fold by 2030, with the EU accounting for 17% of this demand. This surge is largely driven by the rising production and use of electric vehicles in the EU. For instance, the number of electric cars registered in the EU increased by 48.5% in 2023 compared to 2022.

The regulations establish mandatory requirements for all batteries entering the EU market (excluding those for military, space, and nuclear applications). These requirements cover aspects such as sustainability and safety, labeling, marking and information disclosure, due diligence, battery waste management, battery passports, environmentally friendly public procurement, and more. The regulation mandates that manufacturers, importers, and distributors implement uniform conformity assessment procedures and market surveillance requirements.
