Jakarta – In fulfilling the mandate as stated in the National Working Meeting of the PWYP Indonesia Coalition, the National Secretariat (Seknas) of PWYP Indonesia has identified successes, challenges, and lessons learned throughout 2022 and compiled targets in the priority agenda that has been stated in the GBHK into the 2023 work plan. Identification is carried out using monitoring, evaluation, learning, and outcome-harvesting methods in a participatory manner within Seknas PWYP Indonesia, including aspects of organizational governance, strengthening social movements, advocacy processes, and administrative independence. As for the mapping and preparing of the work plan of Seknas PWYP Indonesia in 2023, apart from referring to the GBHK priority agenda, it is also based on reading the developing situation, especially in the extractive sector, energy, and natural resources (SDA). It is also based on the resources owned by the National Secretariat and the PWYP Indonesia Coalition.
Furthermore, to strengthen the organization, PWYP Indonesia prepares an annual report which will present information that will be published. This report reflects PWYP Indonesia’s tireless efforts in promoting transparency and accountability in the extractive industry sector over the past year. Through collaborative initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and capacity-building programs, PWYP Indonesia has achieved significant progress in advancing responsible resource governance. Here are some key achievements and initiatives that have shaped this transformation journey.
1. Strengthening Civil Society Engagement
PWYP Indonesia believes in the power of an informed and engaged civil society to hold extractive companies and governments accountable. Throughout this year, PWYP Indonesia focused on strengthening the capacity of civil society and promoting its active participation in decision-making processes. Key initiatives include:
- Capacity Building Workshop: PWYP Indonesia conducted workshops and training programs to improve the knowledge and skills of civil society organizations, empowering them to effectively monitor extractive activities, engage in policy discussions, and advocate for transparency and accountability.
- Collaborative Network: PWYP Indonesia facilitates partnerships and collaboration between civil society organizations, creating a solid network of advocates working towards a common goal. PWYP Indonesia strengthens our collective voice and impacts through knowledge sharing and joint advocacy efforts.
2. Extractive Industry Transparency
Promoting transparency in the extractive industry sector is at the core of PWYP Indonesia’s work. PWYP Indonesia seeks to ensure that revenues generated from natural resources are managed and allocated fairly and sustainably. Over the past year, we focused on the following initiatives:
- Advocacy for Law Reform: PWYP Indonesia engages with policymakers and stakeholders to fight for a more robust legal framework that promotes transparency and accountability in the extractive industry sector. Through evidence-based research and policy drafting, we contribute to establishing laws supporting responsible resource governance.
- Revenue Monitoring and Reporting: PWYP Indonesia develops tools and methodologies to monitor extractive industry revenues, track their allocation, and identify discrepancies or potential corruption. Analyzing and publishing this data provides valuable information to policymakers, investors, and the public, encouraging well-informed decision-making.
3. Public Awareness and Citizen Empowerment
PWYP Indonesia recognizes the importance of raising public awareness and empowering citizens to participate actively in resource governance. In the past year, we implemented various initiatives to promote informed public discourse and citizen engagement:
- Information Campaign: PWYP Indonesia conducted a public awareness campaign to educate citizens on the importance of transparency in the extractive industry. PWYP Indonesia empowers individuals to demand accountability from extractive companies and the government through workshops, community dialogues, and media engagement.
- Community Empowerment: PWYP Indonesia works closely with communities affected by extractive activities, providing them with information, training, and support to fight for their rights, negotiate fair compensation, and actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and environment.
The Annual Report to be published by PWYP Indonesia highlights the agency’s collective achievements in promoting transparency and accountability in the extractive industry sector. We have achieved significant progress in advancing responsible resource governance through civil society engagement, advocacy for legal reform, revenue monitoring, and citizen empowerment. PWYP Indonesia remains committed to working with stakeholders to ensure that natural resources are managed sustainably and for all benefits. Together, let us continue our journey towards greater transparency, accountability, and sustainable development in the extractive industry sector.
