Introducing you We4Jet
The rapid and transformative energy transition has become a global issue, with various countries pushing for an immediate shift to renewable energy, including Indonesia. The Indonesian government aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and by 2050 in the energy sector. However, projections show that renewable energy will only account for 24% of Indonesia’s national energy mix by 2030, which falls short of the ambition needed to keep global temperatures within the 1.5°C limit. Moreover, there are concerns that the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) scheme might support false solutions that perpetuate the coal industry. Additionally, women and girls from low-income households may disproportionately bear the brunt of inadequate access to clean and affordable energy.
Publish What You Pay Indonesia aims to implement the We4Jet program to promote gender justice and inclusivity as key indicators of a just energy transition in Indonesia.
Objectives
The objectives of this program are to:
- (i) Promote gender justice and inclusivity as indicators of a just energy transition;
- (ii) Strengthen the knowledge of civil society organizations (CSOs) at the national and local levels on gender and inclusivity aspects in the just energy transition.
Expected Outcomes
- (i) The widespread dissemination of narratives on mainstreaming gender and inclusivity in Indonesia’s just energy transition.
- (ii) Enhanced knowledge among stakeholders at local and national levels on justice aspects within the energy transition.
Activities
- Advocacy Capacity Building on GEDSI at Local and National Levels: Conduct training, monitoring, and publications through public discussions to ensure that the national energy transition project is implemented with the involvement of civil society elements, including CSOs, Women’s Rights Organizations (WROs), and Disabled People’s Organizations (DPOs).
- Fostering Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues: Engage key stakeholders in shaping just energy transition policies, including ministries, state institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations. This activity will involve collaboration with relevant ministries/agencies and the implementation of multi-stakeholder dialogues (MSDs) on the governance of energy transition and natural resources.
- Workshops on GEDSI Mainstreaming in Energy Transition: Educate and engage policymakers to ensure that GEDSI aspects are embedded in national energy transition policies.
- Campaign Activities: A series of initiatives aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of gender and inclusion as indicators of a just energy transition through IG Live sessions, PWYP Knowledge Corner, and podcasts, involving frontline communities affected by these issues.
This program will commence from July 2024 to June 2025, engaging coalition networks, relevant ministries/agencies such as the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (KESDM)/JETP Secretariat, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenkomarves)/Energy Transition Task Force, EITI Secretariat, PLN/Indonesian Geothermal Association (INAGA)/Indonesian Solar Energy Association (AESI), women’s groups, local government agencies, and grassroots communities.
